As with most cosmetic procedures, liposuction is associated with some post-surgical side effects and potential complications.

Liposuction: An Overview
To remove unwanted fat deposits, small incisions are made in the targeted area. Next, a small cannula, which is connected to a vacuum pump, is inserted through the incisions to suction out fat deposits. Finally, the incisions are closed with stitches. This procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia.
In some cases, Dr. Wiener may perform tumescent liposuction. This procedure is essentially the same as traditional liposuction. However, a large dose of lidocaine and epinephrine is administered at the beginning of the treatment to “plump up” the fat deposits, making them easier to remove. During a consultation at our practice, Dr. Wiener can determine which type of liposuction is right for you.
Temporary Side Effects
Because liposuction is a surgical treatment, there are a few common side effects that commonly occur. These include:
- Discomfort: Soreness and tenderness in the targeted area is to be expected following liposuction. Typically, this can be mitigated with over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription medication. In most cases, patients can return to work in about two to three days.
- Swelling: Some degree of post-operative inflammation is common. Patients can expect swelling around the treated area as well as the ankles. This is normal and should diminish over the first week or two. A lumpy appearance may be noticeable as well. If this occurs, it typically fades away within six months.
- Bruising: Discoloration around the treated sites may develop and last for about one month after treatment. Dr. Wiener will monitor your bruises during your follow-up visits to ensure there are no complications.
Risks of Liposuction
Any type of surgery carries certain risks. Although rare, some risks of liposuction include:
- Post-operative infection
- Allergic reaction to medications or anesthesia
- Blood clots
- Excessive fluid loss
- Fluid accumulation
- Loss of sensation
- Scarring
- Changes in pigmentation
- Skin or nerve damage
- Damage to vital organs
Minimizing Your Risk
Before undergoing liposuction, Dr. Wiener will talk with you in detail about your health history, current medications, and aesthetic goals. All of these factors will help him determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.
If surgery is considered a potential risk, then he will not recommend liposuction. Certain patients may be better suited for alternative treatments.
To maximize your success during recovery, it is important to closely follow all pre- and post-operative instructions, which will be provided by Dr. Wiener. If you smoke, you will need to discontinue tobacco products for at least two weeks prior to your liposuction procedure.
