Upper Eyelid Surgery for Droopy Lids By Steven Wiener M.D. on October 11, 2019

Upper eyelid surgery incision marksAs the body ages, collagen within the skin naturally begins to weaken and break down. This results in a loss of skin elasticity, which can manifest as loose, droopy skin. Since the skin around the eyes is thinner than other facial skin, this area typically shows signs of aging before any others.

Droopy eyelids can leave people looking tired, upset, or aged beyond their actual years. Dr. Steven Wiener can perform eyelid surgery to remove excess skin and fat, and eliminate sagging. Upper eyelid surgery for droopy lids can give our Scottsdale, AZ, patients the youthful and alert appearance they desire.

Candidates for Upper Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is a completely customizable procedure. It can be performed on either the upper lids, the lower lids, or both. Upper eyelid surgery specifically addresses loose, droopy skin along the upper eyelid.

Upper eyelid surgery is able to correct issues such as:

  • Hooded eyelids
  • Undefined upper eyelids
  • Puffy upper lids
  • Droopy skin that sags from the upper eyelid beneath the lash line
  • Obstructed vision from sagging upper lids

Patients with any of the above concerns should be ideal candidates for upper eyelid surgery, as long as they are in good health and are free of any medical conditions that could increase the risk of surgery.

The Procedure

To perform the surgery, Dr. Wiener will make an incision along the upper eyelid. He creates the incision in the natural fold, or crease, of the upper eyelid, so that any remaining scar will be hidden when the eyes are open.

After creating the surgical incision, Dr. Wiener will remove excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid area. If necessary, he will also tighten muscle tissues to further reduce drooping and sagging. When all alterations have been made, remaining skin will be brought together and the incision will be closed with sutures.

The full effects of upper eyelid surgery will not be apparent until recovery is complete, but the procedure will dramatically improve the appearance of the eyes. Our Scottsdale patients can expect to benefit from smoother skin, a more defined upper eyelid, and an overall more youthful and alert appearance.

Recovery

Eyelid surgery recovery is pretty short compared to many other cosmetic surgery procedures, but our Scottsdale patients should not expect to return to work and other activities right away. For the first week of recovery, patients are likely to experience surgical side effects, which may include:

  • Inflammation
  • Bruising
  • Discomfort
  • Difficulty opening and closing the eyes completely
  • Blurred vision

As recovery progresses, side effects should subside and surgical results should become more obvious. Although most of our patients feel well enough to resume their usual schedule within a week or two of surgery, it can take several weeks for the eyelids to heal completely.
