Eyelid Surgery for Men By Steven Wiener M.D. on July 30, 2020

Middle-aged maleExcess skin, wrinkles, and fatty deposits around the eyes can make a person look considerably older than they feel. For men in particular, these signs of aging can make a person look angry or intimidating. Unfortunately, these imperfections are rather common.

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, lifts and tightens the skin and muscles around the eyes to restore a more alert and youthful appearance. Some may think of plastic surgery as a field geared towards women, but that is not at all the case. Eyelid surgery for men has grown increasingly popular at Dr. Steven Wiener’s Scottsdale, AZ, practice.

Is Eyelid Surgery the Same for Men as It Is for Women?

At its foundation, eyelid surgery is the same for both men and women. Excess skin and fatty tissues are removed, loose muscles are repaired, and the remaining skin is lifted to restore a smoother and firmer upper or lower lid–or both.

While the anatomy of an eyelid lift may be the same for men and women, there are a few differences that should be considered. Men tend to have thicker skin and heavier eyelid muscles. The basic structure of their face, including the eyelid area, is also different.

Men in and near Scottsdale who are considering eyelid surgery should work with a surgeon, such as Dr. Wiener, who understands these differences. Taking these factors into account, Dr. Wiener is able to effectively address signs of aging, while helping his male patients maintain a natural and masculine appearance.

A Closer Look at the Procedure

Blepharoplasty is typically performed with the patient under the effects of local anesthetic. Once the area is sufficiently numb, the surgical incision or incisions can be made. For upper eyelid surgery, the incision is made in the natural eyelid crease that is created when the eye is open. If a patient is undergoing lower eyelid surgery, the incision is typically made just beneath the lash line.

The incisions that are made grant Dr. Wiener access to the underlying muscles and tissues. Excess skin and fat are removed, and muscles, fatty deposits, and remaining skin are lifted and tightened to create a smoother, firmer eyelid area. Once skin has been redraped, incisions will be closed with surgical tape, skin adhesives, or sutures.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

As patients recover from eyelid surgery, they can expect to experience some minor to moderate side effects. The most common side effects of blepharoplasty include pain or discomfort, bruising, and inflammation. These effects are most severe within the first week after treatment. As your recovery progresses, the side effects will gradually subside, and the results of surgery will become more noticeable.

The recovery timeline will vary slightly for each patient and depends on the extent of treatment and the body’s natural healing response. In general, it takes between two and three weeks for the majority of side effects to subside, and for patients to feel well enough to return to work and other routine activities.
